Daniel Vogt Announces Campaign for Ypsilanti, Michigan City Council, Ward 2

May 11, 2010 – Longtime Ypsilanti resident Daniel Vogt announced today that he is running for Ypsilanti, Michigan  City Council as a Democrat in Ward 2.

Vogt is running to find better and faster solutions to Ypsilanti’s financial problems, including speeding development of the Water Street project and finding creative means of cutting expenses while preserving essential police, fire and other vital city services. He also advocates lower property tax burdens while pledging to pursue a rapid increase in the city’s tax base.

Vogt brings a balanced, objective, practical approach to public policy and problem solving. His unique and extensive experience working on both sides of issues and problems make him well qualified to represent the citizens of Ypsilanti.

A licensed attorney for nearly 30 years, Vogt has worked 25 years with UAW Legal Services Plan, a non-profit firm that helps UAW members and their families.

Vogt previously worked in solo practice and for private law firms, where his duties included litigation and other work for two townships and a district library. He has also advised small businesses and investors.

Highly experienced in identifying the causes of financial troubles and finding cures for them, Vogt has skills that are especially important in this time of financial crisis in government.

Vogt has worked on the frontlines of the economic problems affecting citizens in our area, including helping families with foreclosure and debt problems, bankruptcy, and real estate issues.

Through his public interest legal work Vogt has fought fraudulent and exploitive practices in mortgage lending, insurance, consumer finance, collection practices, and retail sales affecting large numbers of people.

Vogt has been both a supervisor and a union steward as well as a co-owner with his spouse of two small businesses.

A long-time resident of Ypsilanti, Vogt first came to the city in 1974 to attend Eastern Michigan University, and has lived here for 32 of the past 36 years. He and his wife Nancy have owned a home at 1518 Gregory, in the northwest corner of the city, for 24  years. They also own a small investment property in the city.  Their son Nathan is a junior at EMU majoring in finance.

Dan and Nancy have been active members in the community. Dan is a member of Measure for Measure, a highly-regarded men’s choral group based in Ypsilanti. Nancy has served on CoPac (the Community Policing Action Council). Together they have been involved in their neighborhood association, church, and activities supporting their son’s schools.
